Carpets occasionally acquire a musty odor from moisture and from pets. It is often possible to eliminate, or at least minimize, this smell by sprinkling some baking soda evenly on the carpet and letting it remain there for about an hour. The baking soda, along with any dirt that happens to also be on the carpet, can then be removed with a vacuum cleaner. This has the added benefit of freshening up the smell of the vacuum cleaner.
