An effective and economical carpet shampoo can be made by mixing one half cup of baking soda into one gallon (or four liters) of warm water. The carpet can then be scrubbed either with a carpet cleaning machine or by hand. However, be sure to test a very small section of the carpet for colorfastness before using.

Note: In the case of hand-woven Oriental rugs, it is generally safest to have them cleaned by specialists in cleaning such rugs.
