An easier way to clean blackened oven racks than scrubbing them with an abrasive cleansing powder is to lay them on old towels in a bathtub. Then fill the tub with sufficient warm water to cover the racks and pour in about a cup of household ammonia. After the racks have soaked in this ammonia solution for about 20 minutes, they can be removed, rinsed off and wiped dry.

Caution: Although ammonia is a naturally occuring substance, it can be dangerous. It is an irritant to the skin, eyes and lungs, and it should be used only with proper ventilation. Moreover, it should never be used together with bleach or other products containing chlorine because a deadly gas can form.
